Essential Daily Monitoring for Pre-Vacuum Sterilizers

The Bowie & Dick test is a mandatory daily procedure for pre-vacuum steam sterilizers. The JPS BD Test Pack simplifies this process by providing a pre-assembled, standardized challenge load that mimics a dense textile pack.

If the sterilizer fails to remove air completely or if there is an air leak, the steam cannot penetrate fully. This will result in an incomplete or patchy color change on the internal indicator sheet, alerting the operator to a problem before actual medical devices are processed.

Key Advantages

Easy Interpretation

A uniform color change (yellow to black) indicates a successful test. Any yellow remaining indicates a fail.

Convenient Design

Compact, single-use pack eliminates the need for making test towel packs manually.

Eco-Friendly

Manufactured with lead-free, non-toxic indicator ink and recyclable paper materials.

Record Retention

The indicator sheet has space for recording sterilizer number, date, and operator for logbooks.

High Sensitivity

Highly sensitive to residual air and non-condensable gases in the chamber.

Standard Compliant

Strictly conforms to ISO 11140-4 and EN 867-4 for Type 2 indicators.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should the Bowie-Dick test be performed?
The BD test should be performed daily, usually at the beginning of the day, before any sterilization loads are processed. It should be run in an empty chamber (except for the test pack itself).
Where should the BD pack be placed in the sterilizer?
It should be placed horizontally on the bottom shelf of the sterilizer rack, near the door and directly over the drain, which is typically the coldest part of the chamber and most difficult for steam to penetrate.
What does a failed test look like?
A failed test is indicated by incomplete color change, usually appearing as a lighter or yellowish patch in the center of the indicator sheet, signifying that an air pocket prevented steam from reaching that area.
